HORC – Offshore Sailing Club in Greece

Poiath or HORC in English (standing for Hellenic Offshore Racing Club) is a leading sailing school that was established on 1961 in Mikrolimano, Piraeus. The main goal of the racing club and sailing school is to promote offshore sailing in Greece and abroad, instructing everyone interested in offshore sailing.

The main building of the school hosts the administrative activities, the lecture and instructing rooms, the library and members’ club as well as the event rooms – where the special events and celebrations take place. It is a lovely neoclassic building in Mikrolimano, just before the turn towards the picturesque harbor. The sailing boats of the school and club are docked at the harbor in Mikrolimano moorings, where members can also berth their private sailing yachts.

HORC is a an accredited sailing school, instructing men and women of all ages how to sail in the challenging and demanding Greek waters and islands. The Offshore Racing School operates since 1969, and includes 4 different courses, run 6 times a year for two months. The school features classes for amateurs, Racing and Advanced courses, taught by sailing champions and experts, and there is also a skippers’ course for those who want to have an official skipper diploma for professionals.

The offshore Racing School has been so successful – with more than 25,000 graduates so far – that HORC established a new branch in Rethymno in 1991, another in Ierapetra in 1994 and more in Gythio, Hydra, Ios and Lefkas.

Except for the Racing School the HORC is known for the organization of the most important offshore sailing race in Greece, the Aegean Rally that takes place in the Aegean Sea every July for the last 46 years, attracting the best sailors from Greece and abroad. During the last few years the most important European sailors participate in the Aegean Rally increasing the level of competition.
